It can be hard enough for you to remember to get in to see the dentist, let alone finding the time to get your children to one as well. However, your child’s dental health may be dependent on these early visits to the dentist. At Palos Pediatric Dentistry, we focus completely on the oral health of children as soon as they get their first tooth to ensure that they learn good oral hygiene habits that they will carry throughout their life.

Helping Your Child Develop Healthy Oral Care Habits

  • Early visits to the dentist – The main reasons adults don’t see their dentist regularly is either because the don’t think they need to or they don’t feel comfortable. Both of these issues can be avoided with early dental visits. When you start your children off young, they will start to see that going to the dentist is normal and necessary to their oral health. Starting their visits early will also help them to become more comfortable with their dentist before any extensive dentistry needs to be done.
  • Teach them to brush and floss – As soon as your child has their first tooth, it is important that you brush and floss their teeth until they are able to do so on their own. By this time they will already be in the habit of having their teeth cleaned, making the transition easier for them. The sooner children learn these good habits the easier it will be for them to maintain them.
  • Avoid giving them juice and soda – Children’s teeth are prone to getting cavities. Even though they will eventually lose their baby teeth, tooth decay can negatively affect the health of their adult teeth. Drinks filled with sugar, such as juice and soda, can expedite the decaying process, especially if they are not brushing regularly.
