Receding gums happen when the gums pull away from the teeth, exposing the porous tooth roots. Gum recession affects countless people worldwide, even children, and it can occur for various reasons, including poor oral hygiene, brushing too hard, and aging.

Though receded gums cannot grow back, there are still several ways to prevent its progression. The best way to protect yourself or your child against receding gums is regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene.

Tips for Slowing Down Gum Recession

#1 Brush Every Day

You must brush at least twice daily with ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste, or your dentist may even recommend a special gum health toothpaste, like Corsodyl. Brushing daily can help remove plaque, keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Before using any toothpaste, make sure it’s age-appropriate and safe for your child’s age.

#2 Soft-Bristled Toothbrushes Work Best

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Toothbrushes with stiff bristles can be too abrasive on the soft tissues of the gums, causing them to recede.

#3 Be Gentle

Brush your teeth gently and thoroughly. Brushing too hard can irritate and wear away the soft gum tissue, resulting in gum recession.

#4 Floss Like a Boss

Floss between your teeth daily. Make sure to get in all the nooks and crannies of your mouth, or your child’s mouth, to remove plaque and food debris from between teeth.

#5 Get Dental Checkups

Visit the dentist every six months for regular exams and cleanings. This will ensure your loved one’s oral health is on the right track. Your dentist will also be able to warn you of any dental health risks, provide preventive care or any necessary treatment, and offer additional support regarding home care techniques.

The Sugar Talk Your Dentist Never Had with You

Most of us have heard that sugar is bad for our teeth since we were kids. But very few people have actually heard why, or which habits are quietly doing more damage than others. Some of them might surprise you.
