When making decisions regarding your child’s health, it is important that you have the correct and the latest information. Many misconceptions about fluoride exist and we are here to help you make the best choice for your little one.

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel. Instances of tooth decay have dropped enormously since the widespread use of fluoridated water and toothpaste.

Modern diets are packed full of sugar and carbohydrates that rapidly convert to sugar. This poses a risk for the enamel covering your child’s tooth. Sugar provides fuel for bacteria and their reproduction emits an acidic by-product that softens enamel, allowing bacteria to enter the tooth and eat away the enamel.

Baby teeth are important because they provide a blueprint for permanent teeth and their proper development. Early removal of baby teeth creates misalignment, gaps, overcrowding or overlapping teeth.

3 Facts Parents Need to Know about Fluoride

1. Not All Municipalities Have Adequate Fluoridation

Every water system is different. You can contact your water municipality to determine the levels in your community. Supplementing with fluoride toothpaste is recommended regardless because it adds an extra layer of protection for your child’s teeth.

For kids with a high risk of decay, we offer fluoride treatments in our dental office.

2. Natural Toothpastes Sometimes Do Not Contain Fluoride

We are supportive of natural products and fluoridated natural toothpastes free of sulfates and chemicals do exist, but be sure you read the labels. Find one that has fluoride to ensure that your child’s teeth are properly protected.

3. Fluoride Is Not Enough to Prevent Cavities

Good home care that includes tooth brushing for two minutes and daily flossing is essential. Skipping even one day can allow tartar and plaque to form on teeth, putting them and your child’s gums at risk.

Encouraging your child to eat a healthy diet that limits sugary snacks and processed carbohydrates can reduce decay.
