Fall is around the corner, which means it's also back-to-school season for students everywhere. Regular dental visits are essential all year round, but back-to-school checkups are also crucial for preventing the most common chronic disease affecting school-age children: cavities.

Dental disease can cause kids to miss more than 51 million school hours yearly. Though going back to school may look a little different this year, it's still important to schedule your child's back-to-school dental exam and cleaning so your little one can have a healthy, strong smile!

Why Are Routine Dental Checkups So Important?

Early detection and prevention of oral health problems can help your child avoid difficulty eating, trouble speaking, school absences, and dental pain. Just like you take your child to a pediatrician for checkups, it's important to ensure your child's smile is also school-ready.

During a routine checkup, the dentist checks your child's mouth––teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and jaws––for signs of decay or disease. They also monitor their growth and development to ensure their oral health and wellness are on track.

At our Palos Heights dental office, we love getting to know our patients and their unique personalities. We always find new and exciting ways to make dental care fun and comfortable so they can practice good oral health habits throughout their lives.

What to Expect at a Back-to-School Dental Checkup

Your child's comfort is of the utmost importance. Before every appointment, we chat with your child, get to know them, share stories and jokes, and ensure they feel comfortable. We then examine their mouths to check for decay or abnormalities. Depending on their age, we take dental x-rays to see what's beneath the surface of their smiles, such as jaw bone development. Next, we perform a gentle dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar so they can start the new school year with a fresh and sparkling smile.

Child with missing teeth smiling | Palos Heights Pediatric Dentist
Child dental benefits are an essential aspect of health care that has special recognition, with numerous states offering dental coverage as a part of their sponsored health care program. As a result, the American Dental Association estimates that nine out of ten children have dental coverage either through private insurance or through a Children’s Health Insurance Program. Such prevalent coverage is excellent news for our kids, but as parents, we must keep our eyes on the prize. This is because most dental benefit programs roll over each year. So if you neglect to use your coverage before the end of December, it may be lost. But...

Why Your Child Should Keep Regular Dentist Visits
Mother and daughter brushing their teeth | Palos Pediatric Dentistry
If you're a parent, then you know one thing especially vital to maintaining any normalcy with daily life is routine. Experts agree that every child should have a morning plan where they wake up, get out of bed, and immediately avoid dragging a comb across their heads. And conversely, their bedtime ritual is just as essential to help them establish healthy sleeping habits. But one routine we parents may overlook is our child's regular dental visits. We usually ensure they brush their teeth twice daily and even help them floss, but this is only half the battle. It's the dental equivalence of sending them to school...

Laughing girls playing soccer | Mouthguards Palos Heights, IL
If you're the parent or caregiver of a young athlete in Palos Heights (or anywhere), you know that mouthguards are a must-have item. But you may not realize that mouthguards are not just for contact sports like football and hockey. In fact, they can be worn during any activity where there is a risk of injury to the mouth, teeth, or jaw. That includes activities like skateboarding, rollerblading, and biking.   As pediatric dentists (also known as children's or kid's dentists), it is impossible for us to overstate the importance of your child's mouthguard. A mouthguard can actually be the difference between a minor injury and a major...
